Uganda, Sanitation Facilities in Buwama

New sanitation facilities are being built at St. Balikuddembe Primary School in Buwama, Mpigi District, Uganda. They will be used by more than 900 children: the school's 736 pupils and around 200 children from the immediate neighbourhood who do not attend this school but share the facility.
The school
736 children attend the school, 418 girls and 318 boys. It is located in Buwama on the road between Kampala and Masaka.

What is there today
A report by the engineering firm CCONSTRIUM from Kampala assessed the existing facility in July 2026. The result: the latrines have reached the end of their service life. There are gaping cracks between the walls and the roof, moisture is rising in the walls, and there is no rainwater drainage at all. The interiors are dark and poorly ventilated, and the wooden doors are so weathered that they no longer offer any privacy.

Then there is the size. According to the planning standards of the World Health Organization, the school would need 17 cubicles for the girls and 8 cubicles plus urinals for the boys. The existing facility falls well short of that. There are no accessible cubicles and no room for menstrual hygiene either.
The report therefore recommends a new build rather than a renovation. Repairs would not solve the core problems and would keep the facility usable only for a short time.
What will be built
- separate blocks for girls and boys with enough cubicles
- at least one accessible cubicle per block
- handwashing stations with a reliable water supply
- a dedicated room for menstrual hygiene
- better ventilation and daylight in all cubicles
- gutters, rainwater harvesting and working drainage
What it costs
We need 15,000 euros for the new build. The association is run by volunteers. If you would like to help, you will find the donation form on our donation page.
